Michael: “My darling, isn’t it lovely, being out in here in the woods?”
Liza: “Well, I suppose you could say that. But there is one thing that’s troubling me…”
Michael, sighing: “I knew this day would come. But I can assure you that despite what you’ve heard at the Kit Kat Klub, I did not sleep with that man from Prague. I slept with your other boyfriend.”
Liza: “Interesting. Remind me to follow up on that at a later time. But right now I’m more concerned about what I’m seeing over there.”
Michael: “Is it someone else that I slept with and shouldn’t have?”
Liza: “Really, dear, it would be nice if you weren’t knocking boots with the entire country, but we have a more pressing issue, so let’s try to focus.”
Michael: “You’re right, my little bearded love. Pray tell, what does thou see on yonder rise?”
Liza: “I believe I am watching an Austrian family running from Nazis while climbing a mountain and singing songs about kittens with whiskers and a female deer and some flower with a long-ass name.”
Michael: “That sounds like a musical I would never go to see.”
Liza: “And now there’s a nun running along and waving a distributor cap. Should we be concerned?”
Michael: “I’m more concerned about how it’s possible for you to close your eyes with all that mascara.”
Liza: “Oh, we went there, did we? Well, perhaps I should ask how it’s possible for you to close your legs.”
Three seconds of silent reflection as the duo contemplated the severity of what their next words should be. Even a nearby deer, frolicking along with a butterfly that had once appeared in a Disney movie, paused to see where this was going. (The butterfly did not notice or pause, because butterflies, despite their prettiness, have brains the size of a neutron.)
Then the duo laughed it off and went back to doing what they had been doing, with Liza lackadaisically tracking the nun on the run and Michael wondering just what he might have missed by not sleeping with the man from Prague.
Originally published in “Crusty Pie” on 07/03/15 and “Bonnywood Manor” on 09/30/15. I did mess around with the ending a bit, just for fun. And yes, I realize that this post is not as enjoyable if you haven’t seen at least one of the movies referenced, but that’s what you sometimes get here at Bonnywood, butterflies not knowing when to stop.

Oh my gosh, I just saw a butterfly pause! What could this mean?

It means you are doing something you shouldn’t be doing and you need to stop… 😉

*my little bearded love* – how I adore that! In fact, I adored it all. Which is high praise from a Cabaret/Sound of Music guilty pleasure seeker … did you know that Michael York blessed breaking his nose in a school rugby match because he felt that otherwise his face would have been too perfect …. such effortless vanity 😉

That’s the best bit of trivia I’ve ever heard!

Poor Liza often wore that beard both professionally and personally, perhaps with varying degrees of awareness. As for Michael, I vaguely recall some trivia about his appearance, but I don’t think I realized the extent of the details as I found his nose rather fetching. Effortless vanity, indeed…

All in all then this is just an average summer afternoon really.

Yes, just a typical lark in the woods…

Lol. I’m surprised Liza’s eyes were never glued shut with all that stuff on ’em. And.. I’ve always loved Michael York. I especially loved him in Romeo and Juliet, Franco Zeffirelli’s version. Big crush then.

I mean, I do understand the concept behind mascara and eyeliner, with highlighting the eyes, but when all you can see is the artwork, me thinks one is going a bit too far…

Ah, Cabaret. I liked the movie until I saw the stage production and realized they took out the best parts. Shame, that.

There were definitely some changes, leaving out some powerful scenes, but I still think Bob Fosse created an admirable animal. I wore out that dang vinyl soundtrack…

All right. I saw ONE of the films deftly lampooned in your post, the other I’ve never seen and never will. Germany, WWII, Liza Minelli….uh nooo. But at least this time I know which film it was… I have often wondered, over the years, how someone’s eye (including her own) wasn’t put out by all that mascara (which is a bitch to get OFF until you try to sleep with it left on and then have to throw out all the pillow cases). I saw her recently in SITC II and yep. Makeup still the same. You get a ‘look’ that works for you, I suppose you stick with it..

Yes. Liza keeps returning to her signature look, just like she keeps returning to her signature closeted husbands. It’s a pattern that just won’t break… 😉

Freddy Mercury told him a bit later the guy from Prague was all Buchty and no jitrnice. Nothing about Liza resembling the lead singer of half a dozen male Mersey Beat band lead singers that Michael missed…
