Communique from Cómpeta – #16

Just a few random song-lyric snippets as I sit by the pool, my friends splashing in the water beside me, as I ponder a snap I took at the Alhambra in Granada yesterday…

I am just a poor boy

Though my story’s seldom told

I have squandered my resistance

For a pocket full of mumbles, such are promises

All lies and jests

Still a man hears what he wants to hear

And disregards the rest

(“The Boxer” – Lyrics by Paul Simon)

Spend all your time waiting

For that second chance

For a break that would make it okay

There’s always some reason

To feel not good enough

And it’s hard, at the end of the day

I need some distraction

Oh, beautiful release

Memories seep from my veins

(“Angel” – Lyrics by Sarah McLachlan)

There was a time when then was nothing at all

Nothing at all, just a distant hum…

(“Hide and Seek” – Lyrics by Howard Jones)

Once we were standing still, in time

Chasing the fantasies that filled our minds

You knew how I loved you, but my spirit was free

Laughin’ at the questions that you once asked of me

(“Theme from Mahogany” – Lyrics by Gerry Goffin, Michael Masser)

All the times, that I cried

Keeping all the things I knew inside

It’s hard, but it’s harder to ignore it

If they were right, I’d agree

But it’s them you know, not me

Now, there’s a way, and I know that I have to go away

I know, I have to go

(“Father and Son” – Lyrics by Cat Stevens/Yusaf Islam)

Maybe a great magnet pulls

All souls towards truth

Or maybe it is life itself

That feeds wisdom

To its youth

(“Constant Craving” – Lyrics by kd lang, Benjamin Mink)

Looking back, these snippets initially seem to be melancholy, but I find them, in perhaps an odd way, to be full of hope, hinting that what we once were is not what we must always be, and there is great solace in that…

    • I am greatly honored to be considered effing lovely, truly mean that. And I will try to do more of these.

The Alhambra is just mesmerizingly stunning. I walked around with my mouth hanging open…

  2. Ah. ❤ Good background music as you ponder that photo. I've never been to Spain (nod to you if you know THAT song, it was a wee bit before your time I think), but I'm experiencing some of it through your photos. Thanks! 🙂

    • Yep, I know that song. It’s one of my faves, not just because it mentions Oklahoma, which was stunning and thrilling to hear as I toiled my way through my younger years in that place…
